Western Red Cedar Shingles & Shakes

Grade 1 Blue Label

Practical and aesthetically appealing Rembrand Timber Western Red Cedar (thuja Plicata) shingles are the perfect choice for any home, both inside and out. Their resistance to weather and decay and the fact that they are CCA treated to BS4072 make these shingles ideal for exterior roofs and walls.

As an insulator shingles will keep a building warm in winter and cool in summer, thereby reducing heating costs. At the same time, the beautiful rich colour tones of Western Red Cedar shingles will add charm to any building with the only effect of ageing and weathering being the gradual change of colour to an attractive silver grey.

Properties..

Western Red Cedar shakes and shingles are renowned for their insulation qualities, dimensional stability and natural resistance to the elements. The species Western Red Cedar contains a natural preservative which make the wood uncommonly durable in it's natural state. It will however readily accept pressure preservative or fire retardent treatments where required for enhanced durability or fire safety. Western Red Cedar's unique cellular composition makes a roof or wall of shakes or shingles a natural barrier to heat and cold. Providing a high degree of thermal insulation. Proper application of shakes and shingles gives outstanding rigidity and resilience against high winds and pounding hail. A feature unique to shingles is their flexibility. This enables them to follow complex contours in an architects design in both internal and external applications.

A natural environmental

choice..

Recent concerns about the environmental impact of the production and use of building materials have focused the attention of architects and builders on the need to specify products which minimise atmospheric pollution and are produced from renewable sources. Western Red Cedar and other species in British Comlumbia's forests are harvested under a substained yield policy which guarantees forest regeneration and biological diversity. Shake and Shingle production, which is virtually pollution free, is a secondary operation utilising waste residuals from British Columbia's forests main logging and sawmilling industry. Clearly Western Red Cedar Shakes and Shingles are the optimum environmental choice of cladding materials.

This bungalow was constructed in 1932
complete with untreated cedar shingles
to the roof. The roof is still servicable
and watertight today, 75 years later!

Energy Conserving..

The cellular structure of Western Red Cedar retards the passage of heat and cold and each cell acting as an insulating agent. Timber roofing and siding has the highest insulation value of any of the timber substitutes. Timber has 413 times the thermal resistivity (R value) of steel, 2,000 times that of aluminium and 8 times that of concrete. The world's energy supplies are dwindling, therefore we must use products that consume less energy in their manufacture and help conserve energy when used.

Emissions from gas and oil used in the production of steel have increased dramatically since the 1950's and have contributed significantly to acid rain, killing our trees and wildlife. Aluminium production results in 8 times the air emissions and 300 times the water consumption as timber production.

Concrete production is estimated to emit almost 3 times more carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons and produces 5 times more solid waste than the production of timber.
