Western Red Cedar - A gift from Nature

Characteristics

  • Western red cedar is naturally resistant to moisture, decay and insect damage. As a result it is the ideal wood for outdoor applications without the need for toxic chemical preservatives.
  • The even grain and relatively consitent density make Western Red Cedar less likely to swell, warp, cup and twist than other soft and hardwoods.
  • Western Red Cedar's natural lustre and subtle, natural aroma are hallmarks of it's universal appeal.

Certification

  • Virtually every major forest company has either achieved or is pursuing certification under one or more certification systems.
  • Approximately 70% of the wood harvested in British Columbia comes from operations that meet ISOs environmental management system standards or have achieved a certification under CSA (Canadian Standards Assosiation), SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) or FSC (Forest Stewardship Council).

Finishes and Treatment

Cedar can be left untreated if required which will turn "Silvery Grey" in colour will also accept clear and pigmented finishes very well indeed. To keep the "Cedar" appearance then a pigmented surface coating must be applied.

Cedar can also be CCA treated when used in ground contact or damp conditions, class 1 or O.F.R. rating can also be achieved.
